Royal Marine Killed In Blast

The Royal Marine killed while on patrol in Afghanistan on Friday has been named by the Ministry of Defence as Corporal Stephen Walker.

The serviceman, from 40 Commando Royal Marines, had been wounded in a blast near Patrol Base Almas, in Sangin, Helmand Province.

The MoD said he had been conducting a joint foot patrol with the Afghan national army at the time.

His death brings the British death toll since operations began in 2001 to 286.

On Friday it was announced that the near 8,000 British troops based in Helmand would be placed under the operational command of the United States.
